My HP laptop had 5 critical failures, 3 of which were hard drive related. I did back up my computer to an external hard drive. However, you cannot restore from an external HD. It would have been nice of Microsoft to inform people of that. You can only restore executable programs with cd or DVD disks. HDs are only good for backing up content, and if you do a full system backup, you cannot get to the content to back it up - ARRRG!!! The last failure involved an update to the bios. It fried my motherboard. They gutted the laptop and replaced the insides. I just didn't trust it though. I purchased a Toshiba Satellite, and it's been working great.
